Bob is a twenty-one-year-old cook who lives in a small one room apartment with his parents and sister in Brooklyn, New York. He learned to cook from his mother who immigrated to the States from Italy when she was nineteen. Bob loved the smell of tomato sauce cooking on the one burner stove and bread baking in the oven.
Bob carries the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) because he’s one of the biggest men in his squad. He attributes his size to his mother’s cooking. His excitement to join the war effort grew with stories told from a barber who always had a heroic tale to tell the kids when they stopped by for a haircut.
He dreams of a life away from the city. Bob longs for peaceful nights without the constant barrage of automobile engines and sirens. He aches for sunny days that aren’t ruined by the stench of trash. He craves solitude.
Bob’s desire to live away from civilization spurred his friendship with Walt Utley who grew up in Iowa in the middle of an open field. Walt longed to move into the city, away from the solitude. Their friendship grew as each one asked questions of their respective lives. Neither could understand why the other would seek a life they hated.
Bob served as a cook at the Infusino's Cafe in Brooklyn.
