Lafe is a twenty-year-old from Alamorgorda, New Mexico, who worked during the day as a caretaker for the Sisters of the Immaculate Mother and worked at night as the opening act to Ivy Hedera at the Chihuahuan Desert Club. Singing is his true love, but the day work paid the bills.
Lafe found love in singing in the middle of a hymn during a Lenten service when he was about nine years old. The song’s tune was sorrowful but the message was full of hope. He loved that something could be so sad yet optimistic at the same time.
A few years later, the owner of the Chihuahuan Desert Club heard Lafe sing during communion one Sunday and offered a job as the opening to the most popular act in town. Lafe accepted the offer before asking his parents.
Ivy Hedera was the headliner for the Chihuahuan Desert Club from 1935 to 1947.
Patrons enjoy a night out at the Chihuahuan Desert Club that was famous for its fake palm tree in the middle of the club.
